How are you planning your children for the year 2050? Or the year 2100? It’s a huge issue, particularly when no one knows what the future would be like at the moment. Historically, people might make at least fair predictions on where the future was headed. But in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven civilization? Forget about it!

However, it doesn’t mean that it’s not worth giving our best to plan for an unpredictable future. In 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, Yuval Noah Harari is helping us do exactly that. After his previous bestsellers, Sapiens, exploring the human experience, and Homo Deus, reflecting on our near future, his new book deals with our main problems here and now, and how we can cope with them. Different philosophies have always influenced the way humans see and influence the world. Whichever one takes the most people in the world helps to decide our history for decades. Fascism, communism, and socialism battled for this right in the 20th century. Liberalism has ended up as a strong winner.

Depending on which worldview dominates, the valuation of various properties rises. What is most valuable is what leaders and nations will fight for, and thereby determine what the future of the world will be. So far, science appears to have beaten all rivals in the 21st century. It’s the thing that we believe the most.

Given that technology is our main worldview, data is now the most precious commodity. That’s why leaders are fighting for their nations to win the giant tech race. The concern is that this time around, nobody completely knows the ramifications of our philosophy. Only look at the stock markets, where computers now do much of the job, with only a few traders grasping what’s really going on.

Neil deGrasse Tyson once made a brilliant speech about the importance of learning how to think vs. only knowing what to think. Unfortunately, our schools are just showing us the latter. Also, higher education is very much based on cramming as many facts into your brain as you can, only to vomit them out once on a sheet of paper, then forget them again. This is a concern.

There is no question that a simple knowledge of history, biology, mathematics, and other subjects is necessary. But beyond that, it’s more crucial that we learn how to manage the new sea of knowledge, how to sort out the important, and how to decide what’s wrong than just remembering more facts.

The purpose of modern education is to ensure that children are problem-solvers, decision-makers, and enablers as discussed in the book, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. Students need to leave school with life skills that help them solve obstacles even though they don’t know the answers to them. More notably, they need to feel comfortable interacting with people around them who have diverse perspectives and collaborative life experiences.

There is virtually no single-dimensional or individualistic field of pursuit left. And if you take the most drastic case of a sportsman practicing an individual sport, such as tennis or athletics, they need to communicate with psychologists, teachers, big data technologists, etc. to work together as a team.

The future is independent learning, personalized consumption, and smaller learning environments where students can study in a flexible atmosphere and learn from each other-peer learning. The teacher-student partnership will undergo a dynamic transition, as flipped classrooms become a rule rather than an anomaly in schools.

Ideas would be above the textbook and more consistent with the implementation of expertise rather than the retention appraisal. Flexible learning pathways, the emphasis on life skills, student-centric learning approaches, and the use of technology are part of the “Education 4.0” philosophy.

The book, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century warns that in this age of rapidly changing technology amidst threats of political disruption, we should brace ourselves for the future by understanding our ignorance in the face of growing ambiguity and by addressing hot political problems, such as immigration, with cool rationality. We will also be future-proof by trying to say the difference between true and fake news. While the 21st century brought threats of extremism and mass unemployment, we can note that, fundamentally, the secret to our stability and survival lies in our own hands.
